Women in STEM in Books

Prompts: Over the years, there have been an increasing number of books about women in STEM. What do you think of this trend? Do you like it or is it/can it be poorly done? In honour of International Women’s Day tomorrow (March 8), what are your favourite books ft. women in STEM and what books are still on your TBR?

Ah, this is a really nice theme, for there are not so many books that feature women in STEM, and I surely do have a few on my TBR that I would love to dive into sooner rather than later.

I must say I love this trend as a former HCA of 5 years in the NHS at the Emergency Department, and as someone who studied for Paramedic (could not complete my studies due to personal circumstances), I have yet to stumble upon a book that is fiction with this type of representation. I am not saying that there aren’t any, I just haven’t found them yet! Hence, I really have no books, especially with this theme, to compare it to and be able to judge whether it is done poorly or not.

This said I do have an upcoming post tomorrow in honour of us women and mothers that I hope some of you might find useful!

So let’s dive into my books they will mostly be TBR ones!

Clicking on the book covers will take you to their Goodreads page

From this selection, I have read only The Love Hypothesis and The Kiss Quotient the rest has been patiently sitting on my TBR! I really enjoyed both books, Ali’s book a bit more, though, since it got 5 stars and Helen’s 4.

I really hope to see more women in STEM in the near future and more medical representation everywhere hospitals are short on nurses, HCAs, Paramedics, Phlebotomists, CT scan technicians and many more. I do feel a bit guilty for leaving my career in this field, and I do miss it, but being understaffed and underpaid and working not 12 but 16 hrs a day was diabolical. COVID was indescribable sometimes, I go back in memory lane and wonder how we managed it all with 4 HCA for 100+ patients in the ED in a big hospital.

I definitely don’t miss the stress, so please, if you know books with this theme, let me know!!!

Happy reading everyone 🙂

  2. Great post, Lin! Ooh, you know, I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it before but now that you mention it, a few romances that feature women doctors as MCs have come to min. Of course, they also feature their men counterparts but the women are great! Two are by Kate Canterbary (one of my favourite/go-to romance authors) called The Worst Guy and Change of Heart. The other one is called Hard Knocks by Ruby Lang. This series by Lang features all women doctors but I’ve only read Hard Knocks although the other books are on my TBR 🙂

Ali Hazelwood’s books are definitely the most popular women in STEM books that immediately came to my mind when Aria and I discussed this topic. But I also have Radium Girls and Lessons in Chemistry on my TBR! I hope you love all of these books whenever you get to them and I hope you can find more books with women in the medical field. Thanks for participating in this week’s LTB! 💜

  4. Hahaha I’m loving the amount of Ali Hazelwood on this list! I had a phase where I was obsessed with her books — The Love Hypothesis was way too cute, it’s one of my all-time favourites ❤️ Lessons in Chemistry has also been on my TBR forever, especially since the Apple TV+ series! Definitely going to check that one out soon 🙂

    1. I know when it comes to women in STEM, Ali is the author to go to, I guess haha. It is a great book I really liked it too 🙂
OMG, I didn’t know they added Lessons in Chemistry to a TV show! I mean, I still am to read the book, but it is always nice to know a TV/movie adaptation has been made
