Hello, bookish friends! Hope you’ve been well and are ready for some discussion!

So today, I’d like to talk to you about the great debate: Books vs. Ebooks vs. Audiobooks.

Ah, the age-old debate: books vs. audiobooks or ebooks. It’s a discussion as timeless as the debate over which is better, coffee or tea (for the record, coffee girl here!). This topic has caused wars, with a lot of victims claimed by each side. Whether you’re a diehard paper page-turner, a full-on audiobook enthusiast, or an ebook worshipper, hopefully, you’ll find something here to relate to. Grab a cup of tea (or coffee), and let’s dive in.

Physical Books: The God of all Gods

There’s something magical about holding a physical book. The feel of the pages as you turn them, the satisfying weight in your hands, and don’t even get me started on that new book smell. (If you know, you know.)

Pros:

  • The Experience: The smell of paper, the sound of turning pages—honestly, it’s like a symphony for your senses.
  • No Batteries Required: You can read a physical book wherever you want, without having to worry about charging or having internet. The only limit is how much your arms can handle!
  • Decor Goals: Books are basically furniture, right? The more you have, the cosier and more personalised your space. Plus, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing your shelf slowly fill up with your beloved stories.

Cons:

  • Heavy Lifting: Don’t get me wrong, I love my physical books, but lugging around a 700-page novel can feel like carrying a brick sometimes. A literal brick. In your bag. Not to mention when the weather sucks and is pouring down…
  • Space: If you’re like me, you’re probably constantly wondering, “Where on earth am I going to put my new book haul?” …
  • No multitasking: Reading a book requires your full attention. You can’t exactly read while cooking, walking the dog, or cleaning the house, or if you, like me, are with a newborn, then reading a physical copy seems near impossible.

Ebooks: Pocket Magic

With a little bit of magic, you can carry an entire library in your pocket. No more struggling to choose which book to bring on vacation—just download the whole bunch and pick one based on your mood. It’s like having a personal library on the go, which is definitely a game-changer. I find myself owning and reading more and more books in this format. It is convenient in so many ways.

Pros:

  • Portable Library: You can carry thousands of books on a single device. Imagine the possibilities! Perfect for travel, vacations, or even just for those “I just can’t decide” moments when you want ALL the options.
  • Customisable Experience: Need to bump up the font size because your eyes aren’t what they used to be? Go ahead. Adjust the lighting for a perfect reading atmosphere, read in the middle of the night!. Your ebook, your rules.
  • Searchable Text: Ever wonder what that one quote from chapter 17 was? Just search! No more flipping through pages in a panic, wondering if it was in the book you just started or the one you read last summer.

Cons:

  • Battery Drain: Ebooks are awesome, but don’t forget to charge that device! The last thing you need is for your Kindle or your phone to die mid-chapter while you’re sitting on the bus.
  • Not quite the same as paper: Yes, the convenience is there, but there’s something about the physical experience of flipping pages that just can’t be replicated on a screen. It’s like trying to enjoy a hot cup of coffee through a straw. Sure, it works, but it’s not the same.

Audiobooks: The Ultimate Boss

Ah, audiobooks. They’re the unsung heroes of multitasking, allowing you to dive into stories while you’re cleaning, cooking, going for a walk, or looking after your little human/s. It’s like having a personal storyteller following you around, narrating your life and adding a little drama to every task. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Pros:

  • Hands-free for us busy bees: You can literally do anything while listening to an audiobook. Cooking dinner? Check. Commuting to work? Check. Folding laundry while secretly avoiding chores? Absolutely. Looking after a clingy baby? Yep, it is a great way for them to listen, too.
  • Professional narrators: A good audiobook can feel like you’re sitting in front of a professional storyteller. The voice acting, the sound effects—it’s like a mini performance! It’s like a live radio show, but just for you.
  • Accessibility: For those with visual impairments or reading difficulties, audiobooks are a game-changer. They make stories accessible in a whole new way.

Cons:

  • Tech Dependency: You need a device to listen to and headphones! If you’re out and about and your battery’s low, or you’ve forgotten your headphones and if they are also dead on battery…
  • Less Focus: Some people argue that audiobooks don’t demand the same level of engagement as physical books. Plus, it’s way easier to zone out when someone’s narrating your book than when you’re reading every word yourself. I am guilty of not being able to focus on some audiobooks, and I find that I miss half of the plot, and the story will not get to me…

The Ultimate Winner: Whatever Works for You!

Okay, okay, so I won’t declare a clear winner here. That’s not how I roll. The truth is, every format has its own special charm, and which one you choose really depends on what works for you.

Are you the kind of person who loves the tactile joy of a physical book, or do you prefer the portability and convenience of an ebook? Or maybe you’re like me, sneaking in a chapter while doing the dishes with an audiobook on in the background or reading a page or two while the baby sleeps? No matter your format of choice, the important thing is that you’re reading (or listening) and you’re enjoying the ride.

What’s Your Format of Choice?

So, what about you, fellow book lover? Are you Team God, Team Pocket Magic, or Team Final Boss? Or maybe you’re lucky enough to float between all three? Let me know in the comments! And, as always, happy reading (or listening or swiping) to you all!

  1. I am usually a paperback (not hardcover) or ebook reader! I find it so much easier to focus with printed words.
I have dabbled in audiobooks, they’re really handy for while I’m knitting, but outside of that specific situation I really struggle to focus on them.

    1. Yes, same here I use all of the 3 formats. I used to love paperback, but I’m not a fan of hardcovers either, here, where I am from, physical books are quite expensive. Also, there is limited space when you live in a flat, haha. I prefer ebooks now, even more now, so that our baby has arrived. oh, what are you knitting?

      1. I used to be a huge hardcover collector haha so I feel the space thing. I am quite lucky to have decently priced physical books here in the UK, though now I have access to a better library I am using my e-reader a lot more.
I’m currently working on 2 gifts, one cardigan for a friend’s child and the Taylor Swift cardigan for my sister!

      2. Me too, when I lived in the UK, I managed to acquire about 160 books or so that, unfortunately, I had to leave there… you do have good book prices and an awesome library system. awww, that’s so awesome. Do you show them anywhere, or is it just a personal thing?

      3. Oh that’s a shame that you had to leave them!

I share them on ravelry (link you can hopefully view without an account!), but I don’t have a public instagram or anything with them. I take too long to make stuff for that haha!
