Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Synopsis:

This heartwarming story has beckoned generations of readers into the special world of Green Gables, an old-fashioned farm outside a town called Avonlea. Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan, has arrived in this verdant corner of Prince Edward Island only to discover that the Cuthberts—elderly Matthew and his stern sister, Marilla—want to adopt a boy, not a feisty redheaded girl. But before they can send her back, Anne—who simply must have more scope for her imagination and a real home—wins them over completely. A much-loved classic that explores all the vulnerability, expectations, and dreams of a child growing up, Anne of Green Gables is also a wonderful portrait of a time, a place, a family… and, most of all, love.

REVIEW:

I was supposed to read this one much earlier, alas, I am grateful I finally did!

From the beginning, I wasn’t sure about Anne. I did find her way too bubbly and all over the place, almost as if she were a nuisance of a character. But…. I digress because I fell in love with this little red-haired, daydreaming, sweet, yet tongue-sharpened and witty girl!

Her story is moving, inspiring, full of adventure, goodness, dreams, and life lessons. This is more than a simple book, I laughed, and I shed a tear here and there, sometimes from joy, others from sadness. The whole atmosphere was otherworldly, it was calm, and one could easily imagine Green Gables with the Lake of Shining Waters, the nature, the people, and the life that used to be back then. The writing style was captivating, dreamy and very witty.

One thing I am noticing when reading older books is how authors from the 19th and 20th centuries were different, people as a whole used to lead much more fulfilling and meaningful lives without the internet, phones, etc. Not going to lie, I’d rather have been born back then…

All the characters were crafted so well, each one with their own personality, faults, and virtues. Marilla and Matthew, Rachel, Miss Stacy, Diana, Gilbert, I cannot wait to see where the story takes us and how Anne is growing into an intelligent, caring young woman, along with the rest of her companions.

I can see how this book became a classic, and what an inspiring book it must have been to read back in the day!

Overall, 4.5 stars for me, and I absolutely recommend it!
