PROMPT: Do you own a lot of books? Do you think of yourself as a book collector? Outside of reading, do you have any other hobbies that involve collecting things? What would you love to have a collection of?

Happy Friday!! No snow over here, but freezing winds and sunny weather LOL, what a great combination I know… Although it was a little better today than yesterday, we went out to our local park, and the little one fell asleep on the swing. So I let her sleep for 1 hour! This aside, I actually quite like today’s topic! (scroll down to the end to find a photo I sneaked in :D)

Do you own a lot of books? Do you think of yourself as a book collector?

Absolutely yes and yes! I own around 1000+ ebooks and more than 100 physical books. Even though the hard copies are not all here with me, I have them all over the place (Italy, South Korea, UK and between my granny’s house and some friends I lend to). The worst thing is that I hoard them more than I read them! This is bad, but there is a Japanese word that I think describes me best, “tsundoku” from the Wiki: it is a Japanese term for the habit of acquiring books, reading materials, or other items and letting them pile up in one’s home without reading or using them immediately. Originating in the Meiji era (1868–1912), it combines tsumu (“to pile up”) and doku (“reading”) to describe a, often guilt-free, collection of “hope on a shelf”. Here, this is me in a nutshell!

Outside of reading, do you have any other hobbies that involve collecting things? What would you love to have a collection of?

I do, actually. I looooove collecting stationery stuff as I enjoy journaling. This is one other thing besides painting that relaxes me and makes me feel better. Speaking of which, the next is painting/drawing stuff, I have a section in our wardrobe (which is huge btw) dedicated to my painting stuff and journaling stationery. And last but not least, I love cross-stitching and embroidery, so I have boxes upon boxes of kits and threads and needles!

The idea of stitching and creating an image out of nowhere is mesmerising to me, and I always have to do something with my hands. I am very fidgety, this is the perfect hobby to indulge in whilst listening to an audiobook, at least to me; this is my safe haven. Here are some photos, some recent, some older, but I am still using the same notebooks for my books and my private journaling.
Also, please ignore the mess and my handwriting 😀

All my posts are pre-scheduled, just wanted to let you guys know that if you see me posting but not answering your comments right away, this is why.

I am curious to find out what you have been hoarding other than books 🙂 Happy reading ❤

  1. I don’t consider myself a book collector so much, but they do tend to accumulate. XD I used to be an active collector of Isaac Asimov books, with an entire bookcase (five shelves) devoted to his works. I reached a point where the books I didn’t have and wanted (some of his histories) were ludicriously expensive, and actively decided to stop.

The only thing I could be said to collect is Boston Red Sox baseball caps, and there it’s not “collecting” so much as “having a nice variety of hats to alternate wearing”. I have two of the classic red B on a Navy blue hat; that design but with a red bill; a red hat with a blue B; and two winter hats, a regular beanie and one with a poof-thingy on top.

    1. I have a few of his books that are waiting for me haha. Unfortunately, the expense is a problem, especially when they cost an arm and a leg, so to speak. But we book readers tend to accumulate books without even realising 😀

This is a great collection to have and comes in handy as well! I wish I could wear hats, my head is way too big for the standard ones, or it’s just my hair, you know, like animals, 90% fluff, 10% body type of thing 😀

  4. Ah yes, I like to categorize collecting stationery and actually using it up as two different hobbies haha. As a super fidgety person myself, I love doing beadwork while listening to an audiobook or doing collages. Loved your embroidery and also the Ghibli painting Lin! Wishing you all sunny days and a peaceful weekend! ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊⋆

    1. Yeyyy another stationery collector ❤ makes me feel seen haha. Same, I cannot stay put, especially with my hands, I always have to do something. I would love to see your beadwork! I don't think I know anyone who does it. And thank you, I did that Ghibli painting back in 2021, and it is not finished, but still, I remember being very proud of it. (speaking of being humble lool) All back to you! Have a wonder weekend ❤

      1. Haha yesss, same goes for feeling seen as a fidgety person. If I don’t multitask, my brain will explode lol. You know, I might just share some of the things I did one of these days. ˶‘ ᵕ ‘˶
You should feel proud, it’s really pretty.

        Thank you Lin! ♡

  5. Oh my gosh, that Spirited Away painting is so beautiful—you’re so talented! 😍 You’ve captured that moment in the movie so perfectly! Also, your crochet and cross-stitch work is also very beautiful. I wished that I could be so talented at drawing and doing crafts like that. I’ve been wanting to try more again this year!

It’s so gratifying to hear that I’m not the only one with a 1000+ e-book list (especially since it’s more than double my physical list and that’s already a lot). I’ve been collecting those books since I got my Kindle in 2012 though, so… It’s been over a decade! That’s not too bad… Right? 🤭

Great post, thanks for sharing the pictures, and thanks for joining LTB this week!

    1. Aww thank you, Dini! I would not call myself talented haha but I will accept the compliment (I am very bad at accepting them) 🙂 This is one of my favourite Ghibli movies, hence I have a tattoo of it with some other Ghibli characters, such as Totoro, Calcifer and others. I really hope you do get around to trying some crafting!

Yeyyyyy! Same here, I am so glad I am not alone 😀 I got my Kindle in 2019, but I have Kobo as well as Google Play Books and Audble so I put them all together, and it comes to more than 1000 ebooks. No judgment here at all!

Thank you as well for being a great host ❤

The embroidery and journals looks so pretty. I like collecting things that I find outside. Like rocks, shells, bones, fossils, and other random things that can not be classified. I have found paces of glass, meatal, and a rail road spike.

    1. Thank you ❤ This is so cool! I bet you have a wonderful collection! I pick a small rock from places I have been to! So I totally get that, would be nice to see your collection one day 🙂

  7. wow, your stitching is beautiful!
I love reading, but don’t collect books, for space and budget reasons.
I don’t really collect anything, for the two reasons mentioned, but I do take lots of pictures of birds. Then I do a calendar for my local friends every year, with my best pictures of the year

    1. Thank you, Emma ❤ This is the reason why I stopped buying physical copies. We live in a small flat, additionally I can no longer justify the price of the physical books here.. I love this idea of the calendar, and this is such a sweet thing to do! Would love to see your photos, do you post them somewhere usually?

  8. I do not own a lot of books. I used to, but now as I read them, I donate them or give them away. I also purged all books that I had already read. I pretty much read ebooks or listen to audiobooks now, so very few physical books. I do collect a couple of things, or at least have collections that I admire, but no longer add to. I love Hummel figurines, but have stopped buying them. I used to collect spoons from places I went, but again, I have stopped collecting them, just displaying the ones I already have. I now collect a Christmas Ornament from places I visit and have a small tree that I decorate with those ornaments.

    1. This is a lovely thing to do! Same here I turned to the ebook and audiobook world, mainly due to space since we live in a small flat and due to the price. Physical books are way too expensive, and I cannot justify the expense. Ohh, these figurines are gorgeous! How many of them do you own? I love the idea of the Christmas Ornament! 🙂

      1. I’m not sure how many I own, but close to 200. My first one was given to me by my grandmother just before she passed away, and that started me on my collection.
