REVIEW:
Riiight… I need to gather my thoughts for this one. I like the cover…
Let me start right off the bat, it was not my cup of tea. I had high hopes here, a witch in her late 30s from the 17th century travels forward in time! I mean, the premise sounded great and fun. I stand corrected.
The story really focuses on how old Thorn is, how this is awful with all the aches and whatnot that should come after one turns 60… It felt like reading about my grandma, rather than a woman nearly my age. I mean, I get it, in the 17th century, people might have aged quickly for various reasons, but here, the author did not do a good job at making this character neither relatable or likeable. It was very inconsistent. I am soon-to-be 35, and I felt attacked LOL
Even when she comes to the future, being 39 is seen as something awfully wrong and OMG you’re old!… What? Since when? I thought we were past that and had progressed with such an obtuse mindset. Speaking of women tearing other women down, this book was the perfect example of that.
Then the whole dating and finding a husband part WAS ANNOYING AND SO BLOODY REPETITIVE! Like Heellooo you just travelled 3 centuries forward in time and are still thinking of finding your Mr Right? It was very unrealistic; her reactions and actions felt weird and out of place. It tried to be funny and witty, but it really wasn’t. Especially one scene involving a toilet and a photo, if you know, you know. How she learned to use the phone and navigate the internet so quickly on her own is beyond me.
Don’t get me started on the whole love potion and turning people into frogs part. Using a love potion without the knowledge and consent of men (men in this instance) is tantamount to today’s date-rape drugs! I mean, in most books nowadays, there is always the discussion of consent before even kissing, so why was this not addressed and taken seriously here? The author just brushed that under the rug as if this was something fun and something normal. Don’t get me wrong, however, there is a way of writing about it and not making it problematic. It was not funny, it was not quirky, it was distressing and not enjoyable. It could be just me, I don’t know, but this is how it made me feel.
Also, where was the romance? It was supposed to be one. I think I blinked and missed it?
Maybe I am being too harsh, but I can’t hide how a book makes me feel. I suppose I had several issues with this book, which unfortunately outweighed its strengths…
Hail the cats, I very much enjoyed the side cat arc, and I wish the book were actually about them and her sister and mother. This was the most interesting part of the entire plot.
Overall 2.5 stars
