Here I go with my 2nd book down for the Classics Club challenge from 1st of May 2025 to 1st of May 2030. I did not read as many classics as I would have liked last year, but this year, I will try to read at least 10 by the end of 2026. Not making any promises, though, since life is very unpredictable.

MY RATING:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Synopsis:

“All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered.”

For more than a century, The Wind in the Willows and its endearing protagonists—Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and, of course, the incorrigible Toad—have enchanted children of all ages. Whether the four friends are setting forth on an exciting adventure, engaging in a comic caper, or simply relaxing by the River Thames, their stories will surprise and captivate you.

Read More:

Hailed as one of the most enduringly popular works of the twentieth century, this story is a classic of magical fancy and enchanting wit. Penned in lyrical prose, the adventures and misadventures of the book’s intrepid quartet of heroes raise fantasy to the level of myth. Reflecting the freshness of childhood wonder, it still offers adults endless sophistication, substance, and depth.

The animals’ world embodies the author’s wry, whimsical, and unfailingly inventive imagination. It is a world that succeeding generations of both adult and young readers have found irresistible. But why say more? To use the words of the estimable Mr. Toad himself: “Travel, change, interest, excitement!…Come inside.”

THE REVIEW:

The Wind in the Willows, what a whimsical and lovely book this one was. It gave me Peter Rabbit vibes, which reminds me I still need to complete it!

It transported me to a time when anything was possible with a little bit of imagination. Before the internet, before the TV and everything else created for our “comfort” was even thought of, there was a river somewhere in little old England where animals had adventures, explored the world around them, learnt a few things the hard way, but overall, friendship and loyalty prevailed.

This is one of those books that just had to be read, in my opinion. We follow a few animals, the Mole, the river Rat, the Badger and Toad, mainly with their adventures and mishaps, whilst the author is also giving us a vivid description of their surroundings. It was delightful to read and imagine how everything and everyone might look like.

I very much enjoyed the river Rat, the Mole, and the Badger. They had very interesting personalities and qualities. The Toad was a different matter; he was always up to some mischief and never learnt his lesson. He was indeed a character that you just want to give a good shake of, but end up liking nonetheless. Their friendship and loyalty to one another teach us an invaluable lesson. The author portrays very well what it means to have good friends through thick and thin, so to speak, not to give up your dreams, but also to be realistic about it and not to dive headfirst into things. At least, these are the impressions I got from this book.

Overall, it was a more than enjoyable experience, and it got a solid 4 stars from me.

  2. Oh my gosh. My mom or my teacher read this to me when I was little. This might be one of the times that a reread is in order. Great review, Lin.

  3. I remember loving both this and the (much later) sequel The Willows in Winter. Several years ago, I picked up the audiobook from the library and was whisked away into the enchantment – I loved it so much that I then checked out the dramatic radio adaptation with sound effects and etc, which was so much fun 🙂
It’s a book I hate I forgot about for so many years, but will revisit more often in the future.

    1. I did not know there was a sequel! Thank you for mentioning this, and it does sound like you have some fun times with the radio adaptation.

The same thing happens to me, too, I’ve read so many great books, and I forget about them. Hopefully revisiting it will bring the same feelings for you 🙂
