Motivation to Read (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Today’s Prompts: How do you motivate yourself to sit down and concentrate on reading? Do you have a set reading time/schedule that works best for you to focus? Do you have tips/tricks that you would recommend others try?

Happy Friday! It is good to be back. I am still in a kind of reading slump, but having been away for a few days does help a lot, so today’s topic feels right up my alley. I hope you all are doing great and are ready for another LTB discussion 🙂

How do you motivate yourself to sit down and concentrate on reading?

Honestly, I really just push through. If my deadlines don’t motivate me, I don’t really know what else could lol. If you, like me, read a lot of ARCs and participate in blog tours, you know exactly what I mean!!

Additionally, what motivates me is that I want to post reviews on my blog, so I have to sit down and read in order to have material to share and talk about.

Do you have a set reading time/schedule that works best for you to focus?

Not really, no. With a baby, you just read whenever you find the time to squeeze that reading in. For me personally, now is when she is asleep or when she plays on her own, and I just keep an eye on her. Also, I listen to audiobooks and she enjoys that too, so when I do housework and she is playing or sleeping in her cot, I listen to books. We also read a lot of children’s books that I bought her, and she loves looking at the illustrations and listening to me read. I also count this towards my reading lol!

Before I had my baby, I used to read every evening before going to bed. Most reading was on the days I was off after I’d done my housework chores, so I would just lie down and read for as much as my time and schedule would allow me to. You just have to find that life-work-reading balance that works for you and your family/social life, whichever applies to you.

Do you have tips/tricks that you would recommend others try?

The only things I can say are to read whenever you feel like it and if you are not enjoying what you are reading, pause it, try or DNF it. If you struggle with keeping your focus, just give yourself some rest and try again. Sometimes our brains can get overloaded with information, and they need a hard reset. At the end of the day, we are humans, and reading is our escapism, at least for the majority of us book bloggers/lovers out there. And yes, we are not getting paid to do what we love, but still we need to prioritise our lives and families and jobs. 99% of the people in this community do this because they love it, and it should not feel like a chore.

So, to summarise, I’d say that my tips are rest, reset and pause or DNF then try again!

Let me know your take on this!

  2. Reading should not feel like a chore!! Say it louder!
I do feel lucky that I have a lot of time to read, I know my friends with small children struggle to do things they used to love, but I am glad you seem to have found a way to make it work!

    1. Exactly! It definitely is not easy, there are days that no reading is done 😆 when I put her to bed I fall asleep myself soon after. Hence I try to do some reading during the day. At the end of the day one just needs to find what works and adjust to the situation. 🙂

  4. Thanks for sharing. Personally, it’s a need, so I don’t motivation. I read a lot, but I only have time to do after dinner and dishes. I don’t watch TV, so I read 4 or 5 hours every night. And I listen to audiobooks when I do manual work – lots of reading time this week while planting our vegetable garden!

  5. Happy Friday! I totally hear you on the struggle of getting through a reading slump, especially with all the deadlines and blog tours that come with reading ARCs. It sounds like you’ve got a good balance going, even with the challenges of being a parent—squeezing in reading time whenever you can, and using audiobooks to make use of moments when you’re doing housework is such a smart approach!

I love your tips about pausing or DNFing books if they’re not working for you. Sometimes, pushing through something that isn’t sparking joy can make the slump worse. Taking breaks and allowing your brain to reset really does help! And yes, reading should be a fun escape, not another thing on your to-do list. Finding that balance and giving yourself permission to rest is so important.

Thanks for sharing your take, it’s a great reminder to go easy on ourselves and focus on enjoying the journey, no matter what pace we’re at!

  6. Having that push to read by a deadline is very good for keeping you motivated and reading on! 😂 I second that need to find the balance that works best for you, however that goes and I fully agree with you about not pushing yourself to read when you’re not feeling it. I know I still struggle to DNF sometimes cos my brain always blares the question: “but what if…” but I’ve started putting down books (temporarily) for when I’m in a better headspace to read it, especially when I know it’s something I’d normally enjoy if I was just in a better mood for it.

Great post! Thanks for joining LTB this week 🙂

    1. Yes!! It works for me 🤣 Absolutely. One should try to find what works for them and recognise when it is time to take a pause! Been there done that, but I trained myself to get out of that mentally, because I wanted to have the freedom to choose and understand that DNFing a book is not a death sentence for me neither for that book. I can still pick it up at a later stage if I feel like it. But again, it is different for everyone, and the way you feel is totally valid and fine, and there is nothing wrong with it 🙂
