Today’s Prompts: Do you participate in blog tours? What do you like or dislike about them? Do you trust reviews that are written for blog tours? When you participate in blog tours, do you connect with other bloggers involved? Do you think blog tours build community?

Again, the end of this week is near, and Friday means another LTB discussion!

Do you participate in blog tours?

LOL, YES! I don’t often do it, but I quite enjoy it when I do. I have a couple of upcoming tours, so I am looking forward to that.

What do you like or dislike about them? Do you trust reviews that are written for blog tours?

Hmm, maybe the only things I can say I “dislike” about them are that they limit you when it comes to lower reviews; if the review is 3 stars or lower, they might ask you to withhold posting your review until the tour is over. Which I don’t really get, honestly. I often choose books that are rated low because I am most likely to end up loving that book more than those that are overhyped and overrated. Take, for example, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, We Were Liars, Everything I Never Told You, The Alchemist, just to name the ones on top of my head. These books do not have a high rating, and they fall on the 3-star 3. something and are some of my favourite stories. Apart from this, I don’t think there is anything else that I dislike, at least nothing else comes to mind as of now.

The short answer is YES, I do trust book bloggers. But to come back to my previous point with the rating, there might be reviewers who would boost the rating so they could still be part of the tour, however, it is impossible to say so, you just have to trust the bloggers. And I always say the best way to see if a book is for you is to actually pick it up and read it yourself. Yes, reviews absolutely help you make that decision, but at the end of the day, reading it and experiencing the book on your own is how you decide whether it’s a nope or a yey! I personally never alter any rating and always speak my mind even when I know the majority might not agree with me, but this is the beauty of it, we are not all meant to like and dislike the same things, books included.

When you participate in blog tours, do you connect with other bloggers involved? Do you think blog tours build community?

I always make an effort to visit other people’s stops and interact with them. I find that blog tours are not for the authors and promoting their work only, but rather a way for us bloggers to get to know each other and create a channel for communication and a sense of belonging and a community. Thanks to blog tours, I have discovered some great bloggers and great content. In the past, we even did secret Santa, and I got paired with a blogger (who I think is no longer active since I can’t find the blog anymore Death by Tsundoku) from Wisconsin in the US, and we decided to send each other a book or two and something that represents our hometown/country. It was really exciting and we had so much fun and learnt new things about new places and fellow book lovers.

Here is what I received, and Jackie, if you ever stumble upon this post, THANK YOU! I still cherish these gifts (the candies are long gone, though)!

So, absolutely, yes, community can be built from everything. Through us just doing LTB and other bookish memes, or book tags and so on and so forth. I believe that the book community is one of the strongest and inclusive communities I have ever had the pleasure to be part of, and I really would like to stay here for a looong time. Keep connecting with people, build relationships and why not friendships?! The internet can be a wonderful place if we all knew how to use it properly and for the right things… But this is a topic for another time!

This is my take on this. I really loved this topic, so please let me know your thoughts on the matter and leave your links below!

  1. Great post! I am up for anything that builds our bookish community, including blog tours, although I am yet to participate in one because I’m not sure how to go about it.

    1. Yes!! Being part of a community is one of the greatest things one can do for themselves. And this helps in so many ways! Mentally and emotionally. I hope you decide to partake in one tour whenever you are ready!

  3. Ah I love that gift exchange, what a wonderful idea! As with anything, I think you get out what you put in to blog tours, and I never understand people who aren’t honest in their reviews!

    1. Yes it was great and so much fun and it really left a mark since I after so many years still think and keep those gifts. Exactly! You do get what you put and same i don’t think i personally ever encountered anyone who’s not being honest but I certainly know they do exist.

  5. I haven’t done a book tour in years partially because I find them stressful! Even though I was in some organized by the actual publisher, some were very haphazard with really tight deadlines and little communication, and it felt like a lot when THEY were asking ME to promote their book! I do know there are a lot of great companies that do it now, and I think that’s probably good because it’s probably more smooth sailing. I had a distinct impression with some publishers that I was working with an intern who just didn’t know what they were doing. And it’s great they get the experience and WILL know how to do it better in the future, but . . . yeah, I was stressed.

    1. They definitely can turn out to be stressful, so I don’t blame you there. Fortunately all the tours I have ben part of were well organised and communication was there if there was an issue. I’m sorry this happened to you. I just wouldn’t do it if is stressing me out and just puts pressure on me. Some things aren’t meant for some people, and that is OK. I, for instance, find readthons stressful and not for me, haha. I did try to partake in one, and that was it 😅

  6. I used to participate in tons of book tours, I even run my own company.
I don’t think there are as many now, because there are so many other ways to get free books, without the hassle of a schedule.

I think memes, like Top Ten Tuesday and the Sunday Post are way more efficient to build communities. I have a lot of views too when I participate in these memes.

    1. Oh this is great didn’t know you did that! Do you still actively run tours? This is true so many platforms are available now and many offer 60 or 90 days for you to complete a book and leave a review in exchange for the free book.

I totally agree! I even mentioned the same thing. And same i just thing people are interested in the other things besides just book reviews. And these memes are great way of knowing the blogger and the person behind the blog and create some great relationships

      1. I had to stop, because so many readers would not post their review when they said they would, and then would even stop communicating with me, then I had to deal with the authors and publishers who were wondering why the promised review was not up!

  7. Do you participate in blog tours? I would if I knew what they were when I self-published previously, I am still willing….

What do you like or dislike about them? I don’t dislike anything yet from what I have seen. They seem like a good way to build community and help each other’s books and pages be noticed.

Do you trust reviews that are written for blog tours? I do. I send out free books to the first subscribers of so many who ask in exchange for honest reviews. I don’t want someone lying just cause the book was free. I would expect the same here.

When you participate in blog tours, do you connect with other bloggers involved? I would if I ever participate in one unless they say that’s not wanted. I’d want to share their work and comment, like etc. so I can help boost them too.

Do you think blog tours build community? I think if used to support each other’s work equally they will.

    1. It is never too late! Hope that if you ever decide to partake you have a good and fun experience!

They definitely do help build community and absolutely i personally have found some great authors and books through tours!

I don’t think I have stumbled upon anyone who’s not left an honest review yet, but i know there are people who do it hence I mentioned it here.

It is really helpful for authors indeed and a great way to get to know other book bloggers.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your opinion! It is always nice to see what other people’s take is on these topics! Hope you have a wonderful week ahead and happy writing and reading 🙂

  8. Great post! I agree that a community can be made through anything and I’m very thankful for the book community and the friends I’ve made through it for being constants in my life for the past few years. It’s a great place to be! Thanks for participating in LTB this week 🙂

    1. Thank you! Exactly and this is the beauty of it! I love our community and I hope it will always be as welcoming and inclusive as it is now. The people I have met through it are some of the best ones and I found so many great books thanks to them and their content. It so nice to hear that you have made friends through it 🙂 thank you guys for this amazing meme and it has built a community on its own haha I love this meme ❤️

  9. I love this perspective! It’s great to see how much enjoyment you get from blog tours, and I totally agree with you about the whole “rating” thing. It can be frustrating when you’re asked to withhold a review just because it’s not glowing, especially when some of the best books aren’t necessarily the highest-rated ones. I’m with you—reviews are helpful, but ultimately, it’s about reading the book yourself and forming your own opinion.

Also, I love how blog tours have helped you connect with other bloggers and build a community! The Secret Santa exchange sounds like such a fun and meaningful experience. I totally agree that the bookish community is so inclusive and supportive, and it’s awesome that blog tours can help foster that connection.

    1. Thank you! It is a great way to have fun and meet new people and books indeed. It certainly is frustrating and defies the whole purpose of having an honest review. I mean, i think I do understand that since it’s promotional content, they would want it pristine and all positive, but we all know this is not the case, really. No book has ever only gotten stellar reviews, lol. Definitely, one should draw their own conclusions at the end.

The Secret santa was a great way to connect on a personal level with other book lovers, and I hope someone does organise one again. I would love to connect with people like this again. It is and I really hope it stays this way!

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your views 🙂

  11. Great post! I participate in blog tours and the books I rate are typically 3 star or above because I select what I know I will enjoy. I have had to back out of two tours because I wound up DNFing two where I took a chance on books slightly outside of the norm.

However, for me, they aren’t community building but that’s mostly my own fault. Being newer to book blogging, I have overdone it and am just trying to meet my deadlines. I don’t have time to comment on other blogs and do the things necessary to form a community. I’m slowly gaining control and by the end of the year, I will have figured out the correct pace for me. Which is likely only two posts a week. But I’d rather do less posting and more communicating.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you, Carla! I do the same, I only sign up for books that I know/think I would enjoy. Sometimes I venture out of my comfort zone, though, and I thankfully haven’t had a bad experience.

I can totally understand that. I personally feel the same way sometimes and definitely feel like there is not enough time to do it all. I am more than sure that you will find it, and once you do, you will feel much better and enjoy the process even more. Absolutely yes for the communicating part, although at times unexpected things happen in life and cut that short. I always try to get back to people whenever I can and visit other people’s blogs. One day I have time only for one of the two things, the next day I do the other, or both, and so on. I think people understand and do not get offended or anything like that because we all have our lives and families, and jobs to tend to.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your experience!

  12. I have been lucky with blog tours and always enjoyed the book, some more than others. The one thing I dislike is that I would love more interaction with the authors, but because I always review, author interviews etc. always go to someone else.

    1. This is lucky indeed. I don’t think I have had a book I disliked on a blog tour, at least not yet. I always try to choose the ones I know I would enjoy. This is true for the authors. I have not requested any interviews, but would love to. Fingers crossed you will have the opportunity to interact more with authors!
