I wanted to pummel my irritating brothers when they posted their own version of a wanted ad to help me with my life.

But I can’t fault the results once the right woman lands in my lap.

Becoming a single father is not a decision I made lightly. In fact, it’s the biggest decision of my entire life.

Which is why when I interview Trista, I know she’s perfect.

She’s wild, she’s opinionated, she wears cowboy boots. Even my pet goat loves her…

She’s the exact type of person I was holding out for.

And to my great horror, I realize on our first night of attempting this baby-making dance—when the lights are low, the cheap wine is flowing and the home-insemination supplies are laid out on the kitchen counter—I want to do a lot more than just make her my surrogate.

I want to make her mine.

REVIEW:

Uhmm, I should say this is going to be a rant review, so if you liked this book or it’s your favourite, maybe don’t read it. I have nothing against people who actually like it. However, this was a very problematic book on so many levels for me, I don’t even know where to begin.

This is NOT going to be a spoiler-free review for the issues I am going to mention below, so read at your own discretion.

Oh boy….

When I read the blurb of this one, I thought, “Ah, this one is different, and it sounds like fun” Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Had this story been about them gradually falling in love with one another, and there was a surprise pregnancy, it would have been 10000 times better!

Both the FM and the MM characters were mental. Trista had so many issues and traumas, both psychological and behavioural, that I don’t even want to go there. Wyatt was a twat, an obsessive, possessive piece of work on his own. The side characters were one-dimensional, and their family had numerous problems and questionable choices…

Personally, I do not agree with surrogacy, it goes against my morals and principles. However, I was still open to giving this book a go. Just because I don’t agree with something, it doesn’t mean I cannot read about it. This said, here the whole surrogacy is done in such a way that it made me so uncomfortable, and it was presented in a very joking and unpleasant way. It rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go.

Trista is presented as someone confident, strong and independent. However, she called herself “cow” more than 20 times throughout the book. She says she is fine with the way she looks and being a larger woman, but every thought of hers we see, she is contradicting the very same statement she made. This girl was full of insecurities, self-disrespect and trauma from her awful family. Not to mention, she is so manipulative and insolent! When she moved to live at the apartment next to Wyatt, she kept bringing animals into the barn without even asking first, and whilst they have a contract for her to live here for only 9 months! What is wrong with you!!! The whole pregnancy and having a baby is treated as a joke, so insensitively and in such an ugly way. Motherhood is the most beautiful period a woman can go through and the most magical thing that can happen in a couple’s life. But here the author is taking the piss out of the whole motherhood and pregnancy part. NO! THIS IS NOT OK, AND IT SHOULD NOT BE PASSED AS SOMETHING TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY NOR MADE FUN OF! As a mother, I felt revolted, and it made my stomach churn. Children are not a transaction! They are not some piece of meat you go and buy from the store just because you liked it. Looking after a child is not something that comes easy and it takes a lot of responsibility and sacrifices. Something that our main characters clearly were not ready to do, nor did they have the mental capacity to comprehend.

Wyatt, what on earth is wrong with you, dude? I swear these two are so toxic not only for one another but for everyone around them. He was so weird and icky and so possessive and obssessed and we had to see this as sexy and attractive? Not even going to go to the sex scenes, it made me sick. Especially knowing she was pregnant…. Never have I ever hated characters so much in my reading life. These here take the cake.

Even when they were trying to be funny, the jokes fell flat and were not funny at all. I did not find anything in this book funny whatsoever.

This book had potential, but I digress. The cover and the animals were the only positives.

I am done with books promoting unhealthy relationships, skewed views of motherhood, pregnancy, or anything else that promotes toxic and insolent behaviour as something normal. Do with that information what you will.

I will leave you with this:

“I swear it was crafted out of the foreskin of newborn babies it’s so comfortable. Not that foreskin is comfortable. I wouldn’t know, I guess. But I venture to bet it’s soft. Adult penis skin is crazy soft. At least what I remember of it. It’s been a while since I’ve touched a penis.”

1,5 stars, DO NOT RECOMMEND! Not going to read the other books either.
