Evie Sage has never been happier to be the assistant to The Villain. Who would have thought that working for an outrageously handsome, evil overlord would be so rewarding? Still, the business of being bad is demanding, the forces of good are annoyingly persistent, and said forbidding boss is somewhat . . . out-of-evil-office.
But Rennedawn is in trouble, and all signs—Kingsley’s included—point to catastrophe. Something peculiar is happening with the kingdom’s magic, and it’s made The Villain’s manor vulnerable to their enemies . . . including their nemesis, the king.
Now it’s time for Evie to face her greatest challenge: protecting The Villain’s lair, his nefarious works, and maybe the entire kingdom. No pressure, Evie.
It’s time to step out of her comfort zone and learn new skills. Like treason. Dagger work. Conspiring with the enemy. It’s all so . . . so . . . delightfully fun.
But what happens when the assistant to The Villain is ready to become his apprentice?

REVIEW:
I think I found my favourite fantasy series of this year! I am speechless. There were so many things that happened in this book, so many twists and turns and OH MY GOD the yearning!!!! I love it, wish more books had this type of romance in them!!!
Let me gather my thoughts, for I am a mess right now. My suspicion about our FMC might be on point, and honestly, I am starting the next book as soon as I finish this review, so I can do and find out.
The author did an amazing job of connecting the missing dots, the plot, the characters, the romance, everything she did was everything that I love in fantasy books. Seriously, the humour, the wit, the banter, perfect.
As of this year, the two books I read in this series so far have the most complex plot and characters that I couldn’t be happier with. I know I probably am repeating myself already, but the way the Villain and Evie and everyone else have been crafted with such depth and complexity in their personalities is sublime and not something one sees often, especially in fantasy books. The political issues, the magic system, and the twists are so cleverly connected with such great detail that makes you actually think. The answers are not given to you, and trust me, I am thinking of so many possibilities of how things could have gone and who might be behind everything that I don’t even know anymore. Maehrer is an amazing storyteller, and rest assured, I will be reading every book from her backlog and any future ones.
Not going to lie, the last few chapters made my eyes watery… I can’t really do anything much, or else I will spoil everything, so I will end it here.
Overall, 4,5 starts read for me, I still don’t like the cover!
