So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family. Please don’t make her go through it alone.

THE REVIEW:
Getting into this book, I knew it would be sad, heartwrenching and gut-punching. And all of the above is true; it really was what it promised it would be. Honestly, I can’t remember when was the last time I cried like this whilst reading a book, probably when I read The Fault in Our Stars, which to me is still the saddest book I have ever read to date. Even though this one comes close.
This is a story that follows Ella, her family, her ordeals and Beckett, who is sent to look over her by her deceased brother. There is so much to unpack here, but I will keep it relatively short and without any spoilers. But before you want to pick this book, check out the trigger warnings, just in case you might have gone through something similar that has been tackled in here and might not want to reopen old wounds.
The author touched on some very heavy topics, no doubt about that. What is even sadder is that so many people are going through these hardships, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for them. I really loved the kids and the dog. Nothing else to add here. They were great, and I can totally see this being adapted to a movie.
When it comes to our main characters, Beckett was great too; his personality, loyalty and everything else he does for Ella and the kids is just to die for. However, on the other hand, Ella really did irk me a lot of times. I don’t know what it is about FMC, but they always must have some deep trauma and would do anything but reason and actually see what’s in front of them for once and stop being only me me me me me me.. Agh, she really did piss me off at times. But this out of the way, I have to give her she did well considering everything she had to face.
I love Yarros’ writing style; it is so engaging and believable. Definitely prefer her contemporary work to her fantasy one, without a doubt. She is meant to write contemporary, in my opinion, and I will absolutely be reading her other books.
I don’t know what else to say without spoiling the book, but do read it if you feel that you need a good old ugly cry. Overall 4.5 stars for me!
