MY RATING

Synopsis:
Kat Leyh’s Snapdragon is a magical realist graphic novel about a young girl who befriends her town’s witch and discovers the strange magic within herself.
Snap’s town had a witch.
At least, that’s how the rumor goes. But in reality, Jacks is just a Crocs-wearing, internet-savvy old lady who sells roadkill skeletons online. It’s creepy, sure, but Snap thinks it’s kind of cool, too.
Snap needs a favor from this old woman, though, so she begins helping Jacks with her strange work. Snap gets to know her and realizes that Jacks may in fact have real magic—and an unlikely connection to Snap’s family’s past.

THE REVIEW:
Ok, remember when I mentioned in a post how I tend to read graphic novels when I need some comfort reads and when I am in a reading slump? Well, this one did it for me, and I’m glad I found it in my library.
This is a story about a witch, a little girl, some ghosts, but mainly about love, friendship and compassion.
We follow Snap, a little girl’s journey of self-discovery, learning how to navigate the world and taking some invaluable lessons throughout, thanks to a “witch” called Jacks, an unexpected friend and a touch of magic. This was a quick, easy read that will give you all the fuzzy warm feelings while tackling an interesting plot and unusual characters.
The writing style was easy to follow, and the art was really nice and sentimental, even. I liked the colour scheme and how the animals were portrayed.
The life Snap is living reminded me a little of my own childhood. Single mom, always working, left to my own devices from the age of 6 or 7. Life was different back then, in the 90s, everyone who lived during that period would know what I’m talking about. So, this story gave me some nostalgia for the good old days, except there was no magic present!
Definitely do read this one if you are craving something short and sweet!
