THE REVIEWS:
These books were quite interesting, informative, but also invite you to reflect upon your own life experiences and encourage you to learn from both the good and the bad. Whilst also having a positive outlook, and in short, if life gives you lemons, make lemonade type of attitude, which I definitely appreciated. The writing style is easy to follow, approachable, with a friendly and warm tone.
I loved that the author presents us with personal life experiences and shows us the beauty of South Africa from when he was a scout and his shenanigans as a young boy and young adult. It makes you want to visit those places and explore Zimbabwe and the Transkei Coast! I myself used to be a scout back in Italy for 8 years, and it brought back memories of adventures I thought were long lost!
Some stories I could not relate to, others touched me deeply, some made me laugh, and some made me reflect and think about my own life and the things I have gone through and have overcome.
One story that particularly stuck with me from the Humorous books is: The Unpredictable Adventure of Retirement Caregiving: I, too, used to look after elderly people back in the UK during my emergency HCA journey, and this really made me think about that time. Difficult for sure, but rewarding and full of laughter and fond moments for sure. I think if you are able to give back to the community, this would be the best way to do it in a rewarding and meaningful way.
The rest of the stories were funny and still interesting; however, I could not relate to them on a personal level, but I can see how people would be able to.
From the Adventurous book, more stories talked to me, and here are the ones that I really enjoyed: A Tapestry of Love: here the author recounts how he met his wife by chance, and they just hit it off and have been together ever since. This really resonated with me and my own way of meeting my husband. We too met, and on the first date, he told me I was the one, which of course I did not believe him if anything it scared me a bit haha but here we are 2 years in and a beautiful baby girl later, I hope we will grow old together too!
Kicking Dreams: Rugby in the Streets: this is a story of a childhood we all had before smartphones, before social media, and the TV, the video games and PCs. We had a childhood that will be lost to the new generations, and simply being outside playing with whatever and making do with the little we had will be something that kids nowadays will never get to understand or experience. Life was so much better; we had a great time playing all sorts of outdoor games and adventures. I miss those days before the internet!
The Reckoning at Nahoon Beach: I really hope I am wrong, but we all have had a close call at least once in our lifetime. I certainly have had a couple, and this one hit home for me. The author is telling us how he survived an unfortunate event where the ocean nearly claimed him. It makes you reflect on how lucky you have been to escape pretty much unscathed, a force so vast and unforgiving as the ocean.
The rest of the stories were absolutely worthwhile, and I can see people being able to connect with them.
I have received a total of 5 books, and this is the first part of my review of this series. The second and final part will be coming shortly.
Overall, I quite enjoyed them and would definitely recommend them if you are looking for something different and engaging, as well as reflective but fun.
The Humorous book was a 3.5 stars for me, whilst the Adventurous solid 4 stars.
