What is one book that everyone else seemed to love except you? (Isabella @ The Inkbound Reader)

Today’s Prompts: Have you ever experienced what seems like the whole book community raving about a book, only to discover it’s not all that? What are some story elements that put you off while reading? What about books others dislike that you love? Feel free to share examples of which books everyone loved and you didn’t, and vice versa! 🤭

Have you ever experienced what seems like the whole book community raving about a book, only to discover it’s not all that?

Yes, it has happened and with very popular books too. But again, we are all different people, it would be weird if we all loved and liked the same things, books included lol! This said, I wouldn’t necessarily say I hate these books except one: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things (I have so many reasons to hate this book with all my being), but I’d rather say disliked them more than others. ACOTAR in this number, That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon, A Psalm For the Wild-Built, A Thousand Boy Kisses, just to name a few!

What are some story elements that put you off while reading?

I really don’t understand the need for extensive and endless descriptions, also when the author deviates from the main story and concentrates on things that contribute nothing to the plot or the story.

The overused and overdone tropes and stereotypes are a put-off for me if not done properly. Also, the sex scenes I have the feeling are written in such a cringy way in some books that makes me wonder if this is written by a person who has never had intimate contact with others, and this is me being kind here. The intimacy in most books is never done right; it will always be over the top, too weird, too much, too little or just NOOOOPEE! Especially when it comes to the dialogue during the act…

The words baby or babe are a huge NO for me; they are too childish and impersonal, and I just don’t like them overall. Sorry, not sorry.

If the story is too superficial and there is no character development and we just munch on the same things over and over again. Also, why do characters keep making dumb decisions is beyond me, like yes, we all make mistakes, but in order to not make elementary ones, we need common sense, and it seems in most cases it has left the room with some books.

The MISSCOMMUNICATION trope OMG this is a ginourmous put-off for me…

There is more, but I will have to stop here simply because I have limited time! It will be a topic for another time haha

What about books others dislike that you love?

  1. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
  2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  3. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
  4. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

These are the ones I can think of that I know people have not liked but I have loved.

What is your take on today’s topic? Do we have matching books?

  1. I can’t stand Jane Austen – and I did study her books a lot – top notch university level. I can’t stand that social milieu.
    Same with The Great Gatsby

    1. I have not read The Great Gatsby yet, so I don’t have an opinion about it, but I do like Austen. I guess, like with everything, you either like it or you don’t, or you are just indifferent. So, nothing wrong with that. What was your major?

  4. To be fair, miscommunication is a tvtrope for a reason….it happens every day! I had a woman call the library and ask if we were interested in a ‘few’ yearbooks: I told her I’d be happy to take a look at them. That evening I discovered that someone had deposited TWO BOXES of yearbooks in our archives room.

    1. This is true and oh my two boxes!! But it gets tiring when it is not done right, and is the main lead in a plot. I read so many books with this trope, and with each book, the reasons are getting more and more obtuse. Nothing wrong with having the occasional miscommunication that would happen in real life, but basing a whole book and plot on miscommunication is just not doing it for me.

  5. The miscommunication trope is a big one for many people this week. I didn’t add it to my list but I do agree with it! I especially dislike it when things are going well, communication is healthy and then just for the sake of a third act, miscommunication is introduced and the characters act like completely different people, lol. I didn’t realise that Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Little Fires Everywhere were disliked books! I thought they were very hyped (or at least, I saw how popular and well loved these books were everywhere across socials and the blogosphere, lol)! Thanks for joining LTB this week 🙂

  6. I am another one that really dislikes the Miscommunication Trope. It is often a no communication trope, which is the part I can’t stand. Someone says something that is misunderstood, so they just stop talking and the world ends. For me, excessive vulgarity and explicit sex scenes are two other things that I don’t like. The one book I started and didn’t finish that it seems everyone else loved is Daisy Jones & The Six. I won’t say I hated it, because I didn’t read much of it, I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it was because I tried listening to it and there were so many characters, but I have moved on.

  7. Someone told me to read The Alchemist because it was life-changing and their favorite book, but I think I needed to read it when I was younger because I just thought it was ok.
