Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Today’s prompt: Books that Surprised Me (in a good or bad way)

I like this prompt! And here are my 10 books that I would love to share with you that surprised me in a good way:

  1. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi: the rating of this book is not stellar, so I did not expect anything much when I grabbed it, but it ended up being a favourite and it really surprised me
  2. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: you either love it or hate it, I ended up loving it since it found me in the right time
  3. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume: this was a pleasant surprise, and I enjoyed it quite a bit
  4. I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy: I did not know anything about this book, just that it was a memoir and judging by the title, I thought it was harsh, but after reading it, I no longer think that
  5. I Don’t Want to Be a Mom by Irene Olmo: this was a very interesting graphic novel that I read before I even thought I wanted to be a mother, and it was nice to see a different point of view on the matter
  6. Foster by Claire Keegan: when I picked this one up, I knew nothing about it, just that it would be a quick and an OK read, boy was I wrong… those 89 pages took me on a journey I will forever remember
  7. Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune: we don’t talk enough about this one! It was great.
  8. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng: my very first Ng book and instant favourite
  9. Becoming by Michelle Obama: did not expect to like it as much as I did, but I found it informative and empowering
  10. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne: a nice surprise for sure, I was expecting to love this one at all but I stand corrected lol

Do we have matching book/s?

  2. I was surprised when you mentioned that Before the Coffee Gets Cold has a low overall rating! I’ve read it but didn’t pay attention but I loved that book 🙂 I also agree that Under the Whispering Door is an underrated Klune book. I really enjoyed that one too! Also, same vibes with Little Fires. Instant fave!

What a great list, Lin! I liked The Hating Game more than I expected to as well. It was a good one. One of these days I will read Little Fires Everywhere. It’s been one I have wanted to read for awhile now. I also would like to read Before the Coffee Gets Cold at some point. I enjoyed Under the Whispering Door and Becoming quite a bit. Judy Blume was a favorite author of mine when I was growing up. I got the chance to revisit a couple of them with my daughter a few years ago and was happy she enjoyed them as much as I did.

    1. Thank you, Wendy! Yes, The Hating Games was such a nice surprise, and I loved every bit of it. Glad you did too! Please do read these two. I really hope you end up liking them, and if you ever do get to them, please let me know! I want to read more of Blume’s. I know she is a beloved author. I would love to do the same thing with my daughter once she is old enough fingers crossed she will like reading like I do hah

  4. So then, have you tried the other books in the series, after Before the Coffee Gets Cold ? I liked it, but was afraid the others would be too similar, so I stopped after it

    1. I have not read them, but I am planning on joining a challenge where you are supposed to pick some series and complete them. So I will be reading the rest of the books soon, and I will definitely let you know if they are worth it or not! I can see where you are coming from, but hopefully they won’t be too similar

  6. Under the Whispering Door was my second Klune book and I really liked it. I agree, it is underrated, you don’t hear it talked about much. I wasn’t going to read. I’m Glad my Mother is Dead. I thought it would be very critical and dark, but like you, Lin, was pleasantly surprised. Becoming and Foster were both 5 star reads for me, but I was expecting to love them both. Great list.

    1. Indeed, this book by Klune is not talked about enough! And it is so good and carries an important message. Same as the others you mentioned. They were a great surprise, and I am glad I read them and was not influenced by others. These were all 5-star reads for me and thank you! 🙂
