Rating: 4 out of 5.

My average rating for the overall series is 4 stars. And I will break down each book and let you know what my thoughts about them are.

First, let me begin by saying this, I have read the first 3 books of the series back in 2016, and I really ended up liking them. Now, this year 2024 I have decided to complete the series by reading it from the very beginning and see how I feel about it.

The official trilogy

When I read these 3 books I instantly loved them. The story, the characters, the writing everything was perfect, new and refreshing as well as the photos that were included in the books gave that touch and allowed the reader to connect on a deeper level with the world of the peculiars.

BOOK ONE

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Had I been told to choose a favourite book from this trilogy without a doubt I would have picked Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children right off the bat.

As already mentioned, the whole experience of reading the physical copy of it was otherworldly, thanks to the photos and the engrossing writing style Riggs has. The magical realism is a genre that I enjoy a lot and this book brought it to another level for me personally. And in my opinion, this book was the best.

I just want to quickly add that I did watch the movie when it came out, I loved the cast, and the fact that Tim Burton was directing it, however it did have its own creative discrepancies from the book, which I guess is alright for a movie can never be better than the book (maybe in rare occasions it could, but this was not the case…)

Just look at the poster it is quite cool :)) If you have not seen the movie I am linking its trailer here.

Additionally, Ransom Riggs has made his own official book trailer, which I find quite awesome.

BOOK TWO

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Hollow City was a great continuation of this series and again the world-building character growth and dynamics were on point. It definitely showed each character in a different light and what their personalities are. In combination with this, we also get to know more in-depth about the story and the world of the peculiars as a whole.

BOOK THREE

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Now, personally, from my standpoint, this book should have been the end of the series. It wrapped up nicely in the Library of Souls and for me the ending was perfect. I will not spoil anything, so do not worry, but keep in mind that if you are planning on reading these books you can end it with the 3rd book. You do not have to finish the series in case you have a wish to ruin it for yourself going further then be my guest and go ahead.

This said, from the next book it went downhill for me and it kept getting worse and worse. I gave A Map of Days 4 stars out of 5, which is not bad, however at this point felt like I was not reading the same series anymore, The Conference of the Birds got 3, and The Desolations of Devil’s Acre got 2 stars.

What really pissed me off was how the relationship between Emma and Jacob was portrayed, and in my humble opinion the hollows were the real victims here lol I felt bad for them.

The finish of the series was more than disappointing for me and I wish I stopped reading it at the 3rd book, which was originally supposed to be the last one of the trilogy…

I know I might be from the minority here, however, the way I see it Riggs has lost the connection with the original story and was trying to keep the series alive by adding cliches here and there and adding plots and twists to the rest of the books that made me roll my eyes and just made me wonder:

Why, would you do that….

If you have read the last 3 books you probably know what I’m referring to, you might agree with me or disagree that is absolutely fine we are all entitled to our own opinions at the end of the day.

To wrap it up quite disappointed, but loved the original trilogy nonetheless. I still highly recommend you guys read them and see how you feel about them.

Let me know what your thoughts are, have you read the books and have you seen the movie?
