’‘You don’t ever have to say anything,’ he says. ‘Always remember that as a thing you need never do. Many’s the man lost much just because he missed a perfect opportunity to say nothing.’’
Foster, Claire Keegan
This short story is the winner of Davy Byrnes Memorial Prize and I don’t know why for the love of every book written have I not read this one earlier??
I honestly did not know what to expect, I went in blind without even reading the synopsis and it felt right to do so. I have never been more glad to do that and it has easily gained a special place in my heart and on my favourite books shelf.
Although only 89 pages long this story had the power to blow off brick houses and it sure blew off my brick house where my heart resided.
The story is set in rural Ireland in the 80s and follows a little girl given to strangers who are to look after her until her mother gives birth.
I don’t really think you should know anything else going into it. Just you have to live it and experience Keegan as I did.
Here is a trailer of the movie based on this book and I can’t wait to watch it.
“God help you child. If you were mine, I’d never leave you in a house with strangers.”
